The Classification Technical Committees are comprised of technical experts appointed by the Board.

Each committee meets regularly to consider applications for classification and is tasked with assessing the quality of varieties against the technical requirements as detailed in the Classification Guidelines.

On occasion we seek applications for new Associate and Members to the Technical Committees via an Expression of Interest.

Panel Member – Wheat Variety Classification Panel

Use your extensive knowledge of Australian Wheat to contribute to the classification of new wheat varieties.

  • One full-member position available
  • Two (2) year term
  • Commit up to 30 days per year

The Opportunity

The Wheat Variety Classification Panel (Panel) is seeking a new member to be appointed on a 2-year term.

As a member of the Panel, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the classification of new wheat varieties in Australia, using your extensive knowledge and experience.

You will work together with other panel members to:

  • apply the requirements and processes set out by Grains Australia (GA), and the GA Wheat Council, in the classification of new wheat varieties;
  • provide explanation of the decisions relative to those requirements; and
  • identify potential changes to the requirements and report those to GA executives for review.

Selection Criteria

We are looking for an individual with significant knowledge and experience in:

  • Australian Wheat classes
  • Wheat quality evaluation, assessment of data, and/or categorisation of wheat for end-use potential
  • Wheat end products and effect of quality factors on those
  • Flour milling process
  • The complex inter-relationships of wheat quality factors
  • The various testing methods employed in wheat quality laboratories, and the extent to which data describing particular wheat parameters are interchangeable
  • The international wheat market, its quality requirements and the key characteristics of wheats exported by Australia’s exporters
  • The quality of current control varieties

What we Offer

You will be engaged as a contractor and remunerated by the hour for your expertise. The total annual time commitment will be around 30 days.

This includes face to face meetings, online meetings and your own preparation time.

Associate Panel Member – Wheat Variety Classification Panel

Use your existing expertise in Australian Wheat to undertake a training position contribute to the classification of new wheat varieties.

  • Two associate-member positions available
  • Initial 12-18 month term, with a view to move to full member position
  • Commit up to 30 days per year

The Opportunity

The Wheat Variety Classification Panel (Panel) is seeking an Associate Member to be appointed on a 12-18 month term.

An Associate Member position is designed for candidates wanting to acquire expertise in Wheat Varietal Classification and then move into a full Panel member role.

You will receive training, and shadow the panel as they:

  • apply the requirements and processes set out by Grains Australia (GA) and Wheat Council in the classification of new wheat varieties;
  • provide explanation of the decisions relative to those requirements; and
  • identify potential changes to the requirements and report those to GA executives for review.

Selection Criteria

We are looking for an individual with existing knowledge, comprehension and/or exposure to:

  • Australian Wheat classes
  • Wheat, flour, dough and end product quality testing and data analysis
  • End-uses of wheat and effect of quality factors on those end products
  • The flour milling process, flour quality and its impact on end product
  • The complex inter-relationships of wheat quality factors
  • The international wheat market and each market requirements (desirable)
  • Quality of current control varieties (desirable)
