Australia produces high quality two-row barley sought after for its favourable malting properties and its suitability for brewing purposes.

Classification of new Malting Barley varieties provides a proven performance record of industry-recognised trials for malting and brewing, and it is an important indication to the various markets that a Malting Barley variety has been duly tested and evaluated.

The Grains Australia Barley Council supports the Malting Barley Classification Framework.

The evaluation of barley submissions is carried out by the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC), an independent committee of the Grains Australia Barley Council.

Established evaluation and testing procedures are in place and maintained in association with the MBIBTC, Pilot Malting Australia (PMA) and Pilot Brewing Australia (PBA).
