The Wheat Variety Master List contains the names of all current varieties approved by Australia’s wheat classification process.
The Wheat Variety Master List records the highest possible class available for respective varieties across each Zone. It is updated annually with distribution to stakeholders, and published on the Grains Australia website on August 1.
With new variety releases added each year providing improved attributes for the grower and market, it is important to assess older varieties role in the current and upcoming seasons. The process for reviewing old varieties can be viewed here.
The practical implementation of the classification of wheat varieties is through acceptance of the Wheat Variety Master List as the basis for segregation at harvest, and accurate declaration of variety upon delivery. This is achieved by incorporating the Master List into the Grain Trade Australia’s (GTA) Wheat Standards published on behalf of industry each year.
