The Grains Australia Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) met recently to carry out assessment of the various varieties currently under evaluation.
Summary of results:
Varieties undergoing Stage Two Evaluation
- Beast: Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2023 and Stage Two evaluation will be continued in 2024.
- Cyclops: Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2023 and Stage Two evaluation will be continued in 2024.
- Yeti: Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2023 and Stage Two evaluation will be continued in 2024.
A Stage Two evaluation on InterGrain’s barley variety Zena CL and SECOBRA RECHERCHES barley variety Laperouse is still pending, and an update is expected to be provided to the industry in coming months when further information is anticipated to be available.
Varieties undergoing Stage One Evaluation
Parcels of grain were pilot malted, as planned, to satisfy the requirements for Stage One.
- Titan AX has successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials in 2024.
- Neo has successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials in 2024.
Varieties accepted into Accreditation Program
Grains Australia has accepted an application for one new variety for malting barley evaluation.
Spinnaker has been submitted from SECOBRA RECHERCHES and has been accepted into Stage Zero.
Sufficient grain parcels for Spinnaker and one grain parcel for IGB21130 (accepted into Stage Zero in 2023) are available for the commencement of Stage One evaluation in 2024 (subject to final quality checks) and will be confirmed when final programming for the year is completed in coming weeks.
