New resources providing guidance on the malting quality potential of recently accredited malt barley varieties are now available on the Grains Australia website.

Grains Australia’s Malt Performance Summaries include malt variety quality data accumulated from pilot malting trials and commercial production, which is charted alongside data for established benchmark varieties.

“The summaries are intended to provide industry stakeholders and customers of Australian malting barley with additional information about newly accredited malting varieties,” Grains Australia Classification General Manager Megan Sheehy said.

“Summaries developed to date are for recently accredited malt varieties that have accumulated sufficient data during and after the classification process.

“They are intended to be used as a guide only on the malting performance of newly accredited varieties and it is important to note that they are not statistically definitive.”

To date, Malt Performance Summaries have been developed for the varieties Bottler, Buff, Commodus CL, Kiwi, Maximus CL and Minotaur.

Dr Sheehy acknowledged the contributions made by Grains Australia’s Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) and Australian maltsters in the development of the Malt Performance Summaries.

The Malt Performance Summaries are available on the Grains Australia website at grainsaustralia.com.au.
