The Grains Australia Barley Council has met to consider the recommendations from the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) for the various varieties currently under evaluation.

Grains Australia took responsibility for all the technical functions associated with barley varietal classification, trade and market access, and information and education on behalf of the Australian barley industry following a merger with Barley Australia in May 2022.

Summary of results:

Varieties undergoing Stage Two Evaluation

  • Commodus CL (IGB1908T): Insufficient grain was available to complete full evaluation in 2022 and will continue Stage Two evaluation in 2023.

Varieties undergoing Stage One Evaluation
Parcels of grain were pilot malted, as planned, to satisfy the requirements for Stage One.

  • AGTB0244 has successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials in 2023.
  • AGTB0318 has successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials in 2023.
  • Zena CL (IGB20125T) has successfully completed Stage One evaluation and can now proceed into Stage Two commercial evaluation trials in 2023.

Varieties accepted into Accreditation Program
Grains Australia has accepted applications for three new varieties for malting barley evaluation. IGB22102T and IGB21130 have been submitted from InterGrain and Titan AX from Australian Grain Technologies (AGT). Each of these varieties has been accepted into Stage Zero. These varieties cover a range of adaptations and quality attributes, Titan AX contains novel CoAxium technology, resulting in tolerance to the Group 1 QPE grass selective herbicide and IGB22102T is an addition to the suite of imidazolinone barley varieties available to growers.

Sufficient grain parcels of two out of three varieties (IGB22102T and Titan AX) are available for the commencement of Stage One evaluation in 2023 (subject to final quality checks) and will be confirmed when final programming for the year is completed in the coming weeks.
